What fresh fruit from Aragon is in season?

Did you know that eating seasonal fruit has many benefits for our health?

Nowadays, we're more than accustomed to having almost unlimited fruit available year-round, even if it means artificially cultivating it in greenhouses, sacrificing its flavor and nutritional properties.

Fruit should be in season. Each type of fruit has a different ripening and harvesting period, and we must respect this. By eating each fruit in its season, we ensure that it retains its full flavor and is offered at a better price—it's all benefits.

The Aragon region is famous for its seasonal fruit, especially the Calanda Peach DOP, which you've surely heard of.

But what other fresh fruits can you eat during these months in our region?

What makes the fruit of Aragon special?

Aragon is an autonomous community with a wide variety of microclimates, allowing for the cultivation of a wide variety of fruits.

We must bear in mind that Aragon is a very large community, with cold and dry climates, such as the Pyrenees or Teruel, as well as more humid and warm climates, such as the Ebro plain.

Both in the orchards of the fertile Ebro plains and in the higher reaches of the Pyrenees, Aragon offers an excellent production of fresh fruit throughout the year.

During spring and early summer, the warm and sunny climate favors the harvest of a wide variety of fruits that reach the markets with all their flavor and freshness, such as nectarines, peaches, and plums.

fresh fruits from Aragon in spring

In May and throughout the summer, the fruit season in Aragon begins to flourish. The region's most characteristic varieties are at their peak for harvest, the perfect time to eat our fruit.

Some of our most notable fruits this season are:

Cherries from the five villages

One of the most emblematic fruits of Aragon is the cherry, especially the varieties grown in the Cinco Villas region.

This fruit, which begins to be harvested in late May, is renowned for its sweetness and intense flavor.

Cherries from Aragon are perfect for eating fresh, in desserts, or even in homemade jams. Furthermore, their high content of antioxidants and vitamins A and C makes them an excellent choice for improving cardiovascular health and the immune system.

Strawberries from Huesca

Strawberries from the province of Huesca are another agricultural gem of Aragon.

In May, strawberries reach their peak, being the sweetest and juiciest.

They are grown mainly in the Hoya de Huesca region, where the climate favors their growth and ripening.

These strawberries are enjoyed both on their own and in smoothies, salads, or cakes. They are also a source of vitamin C, making them an ideal ally for strengthening the immune system.

Apricots from Teruel

The apricot is a fruit that stands out in the province of Teruel, where crops begin to bear fruit in late spring.

Apricots are an excellent source of vitamin A, which helps maintain eye and skin health.

In addition, their high fiber and antioxidant content helps improve digestion and protects the body against the effects of premature aging.

Aragonese apricots have a sweet and slightly acidic flavor that makes them perfect for enjoying fresh or in desserts, such as jams, tarts, and compotes.

Esperiega apple

The Esperiega apple is the most consumed apple in the Ademuz area, near Teruel.

This type of apple is perfect for eating year-round, although we recommend eating it especially in spring, when it is ripest and sweetest.

You can eat it on its own or try it in our homemade jams.

Pears from the Ribera del Duero

The banks of the Ebro River are known for their production of apples and pears, which reach ripeness in the early months of spring. Although these fruits have a longer season, we can already start to find the first fresh harvests of the season in May.

These fruits are an excellent source of fiber, antioxidants, and essential nutrients.

Calanda peach

Without a doubt, the most emblematic fruit of the province of Teruel, and for good reason.

The Calanda peach has a Protected Designation of Origin, which is a seal of quality and prestige.

Bagged peaches are perfect for eating at this time of year, as they reach their peak ripeness, allowing you to enjoy all their flavor and juiciness.

We recommend eating them daily because their delicious, intense, and sweet flavor is addictive.

Benefits of consuming fresh seasonal fruit

As we've already mentioned, consuming fresh, seasonal fruit has multiple benefits for both our health and the environment.

By choosing fruits that are at their peak in terms of flavor and nutrition, we are making the most of their properties, in addition to benefiting from competitive prices.

1. Greater Nutritional Value

Fresh, seasonal fruits are not only tastier but also contain more nutrients. During their harvest season, fruits ripen naturally on the tree or plant, allowing them to develop their full nutritional profile. By consuming them at their peak, we obtain a higher concentration of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

2. Sustainability and Support for Local Agriculture

Buying seasonal fruit also means supporting local farmers and promoting sustainability. Seasonal fruits require less transportation and storage, which reduces the carbon footprint associated with their consumption. Furthermore, supporting local producers helps keep traditional agriculture alive and preserve Aragon's rural landscape.

3. Variety and Fun in Your Diet

The fruit of each season has its own characteristics that allow for new culinary experiences throughout the year.

We hope our post has encouraged you to eat fresh spring fruit, and seasonal fruit in general. Below is a selection of fresh fruit from Teruel for you to browse.
