How to preserve peaches for several days at home

When fruit season arrives in Aragon, one fruit stands out above all others in our fields: the peach.

This fruit reaches its peak sensory expression and plumpness with the renowned Calanda Peach, a true gift for the palate during the spring and summer months.

However, due to its special nature, it's very easy and common to encounter the problem of preventing it from ripening too quickly.

If you've bought a good box of fresh fruit and are worried it might spoil, don't worry. Here we'll show you the best tips and guidelines for preserving peaches.

THE FIRST STEP: CLASSIFY ACCORDING TO THEIR MATURITY

Not all the pieces in the box are at the same stage of ripeness. To avoid surprises, a quick manual inspection will be carried out upon arrival.

  • Firm, green fruit:

Needs a few days to reach its peak ripeness. Leave at room temperature.

  • Ripe, white fruit:

Ready to eat. This peach should be protected immediately.

BASIC TIPS FOR STORAGE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE

If your peaches are still a little firm, the goal is to let them ripen gradually. Follow these exceptional recommendations:

  • Stem facing down:

Place it on a tray lined with kitchen paper or on a flat surface.

  • DO NOT pile up:

Do not place them on top of each other; this will accelerate the appearance of dark spots and mold.

  • AWAY from direct sunlight:

A cool, dry, and well-ventilated place.

  • CAUTION with ethylene:

Do not combine it in the same fruit bowl with Apples or bananas, as they accelerate the ripening of peaches.

HOW TO STORE PEACHES IN THE REFRIGERATOR

If a peach is already ripe and won't be eaten the same day, the cold will be your best friend to slow down the ripening process. However, you have to do it correctly:

  • Use the vegetable drawer: To protect the flesh, it's ideal; it's the least cold part of the refrigerator.
  • NEVER store them in sealed plastic bags: This traps moisture and ruins the skin.
  • Take them out before eating: To fully enjoy their aroma and flavor, take them out about 20 minutes beforehand.
