SANGRIA: The best drink for summer

Do you have a bottle of wine in the fridge waiting to be consumed? Don't know how to cool off on these hot summer days?

We have the solution: sangria is undoubtedly one of the most representative drinks of our Spanish culture, and it's no wonder. A refreshing, delicious, and easy-to-prepare drink is the key to withstanding the heat of the summer months.

It's made primarily with red wine, although the recipe may vary depending on the region or your personal taste.

Preparing sangria is super simple, but if you want to learn how to do it properly, stay tuned for our guide!

HOW TO MAKE SANGRIA WITH RED WINE?

What do we need?

  • 750 ml red wine
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 orange
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 glass of lemon soda, or club soda
  • Ice, the more the better
  • 1 splash of liqueur (optional)

Let's begin:

  1. Wash the orange and lemon and cut them into thin slices or cubes.
  2. Place all the fruit slices (or cubes) in a large pitcher, pour in the wine completely, and add the tablespoons of sugar.
  3. Stir well until the sugar dissolves; you can also substitute honey or agave.
  4. If using liqueur, add a splash of a fruitier liqueur, such as punch.
  5. Add the soda before serving and stir. Finally, add the ice and let it chill for approximately 5 minutes.

We recommend adding the ice as the last step, and instead of placing it in the pitcher, add it directly to the glasses in which you will serve your sangria.

This will prevent the drink from becoming excessively "watered down," as the ice cubes will melt over time. If they're in the pitcher, the entire sangria will be diluted by the water they release, gradually weakening its flavor.

Enjoy this drink very cold, which will refresh you during the hottest hours. For extra chill, you can place the glasses in the freezer about 20 minutes before serving; this way, it will stay cool longer.

HOW TO MAKE SANGRIA WITH WHITE WINE?

WHAT DO WE NEED?

  • 1 1/2 liters of white wine
  • 2 lemons
  • 1/2 liter of fruit juice
  • 100g of sugar
  • Assorted fruit
  • 1 small glass of sweet liqueur
  • Ice, again, lots of ice

Let's begin:

  1. Squeeze the two lemons and set aside the juice for later.
  2. For the fruit juice, you can use a packaged one you've purchased or make your own with your favorite fruit. We recommend orange or strawberry, which pair very well with this recipe.
  3. Place the lemon juice and fruit juice in a saucepan over medium heat. When they're slightly warmed, which will help the sugar dissolve more quickly, add the sugar and stir until combined. Then, turn off the heat and set aside.
  4. Peel and chop the fruit. Ideal fruits for adding color would be pear, pineapple, or strawberries.
  5. Pour the juices and the white wine into a pitcher with the diluted sugar. Add the small glass of liqueur and the fruit pieces.
  6. Finally, add the ice cubes and stir well. Let it cool and enjoy!

As in the red wine sangria recipe, we recommend adding ice cubes directly to the glasses you're serving, rather than placing them in the pitcher.

Also, as an extra tip, fresh herbs, such as spearmint or mint, pair wonderfully with this white wine sangria, adding an extra refreshing touch.

Recommendations of our wines to prepare sangria

By now, you might be imagining yourself holding a glass of delicious, chilled sangria, but have you considered what type of wine is best for making it?

If you want to make a sangria with an extra touch of flavor, we recommend taking a look at our wine selection, as the nuances of the wine will directly influence the final taste of the sangria.

WHAT DISHES DOES SANGRIA GO WITH?

Now that you have your pitcher of sangria chilled, what are the best dishes to pair it with?

Sangria is a refreshing and fruity drink with a hint of alcohol, making it very versatile when pairing with meals.

Some of our recommendations for pairing sangria are:

  • Tapas and appetizers: The combination with the salty flavor of tapas enhances its flavor and freshness. For example, a potato omelet, ham, cheese, croquettes, etc. What few people know is that the combination of fried foods with sangria enhances their sweet flavors, reducing the bitterness, making tapas and fried foods the perfect companion.
  • Seafood and fish: The sangria that pairs perfectly with fish is sangria with white wine. This sangria pairs perfectly, as its citrusy touch enhances the flavor of the fish—a real success.
  • Rice dishes: with a young red wine sangria and citrus fruits, you'll have an ideal combination. Almost any creamy rice will be the perfect accompaniment.
  • Desserts: If you're more into sweets, don't worry; you can also pair a delicious dessert with your white wine sangria. We recommend a fruit salad, cheesecake, lemon cake, or chocolate cake.

As you can see, it's a very versatile drink to pair, so it's the perfect excuse to invite your friends over for dinner and delight them with a good meal and an ice-cold sangria. Enjoy the summer!
