How to grow shiitake at home?

You may not know, but you can easily grow shiitake mushrooms at home in a small space.

Traditionally, shiitake were grown on oak or beech logs, but they can also be grown on sawdust blocks or prepared substrates. Commercial grow kits are available for home cultivation, which has increased its popularity.

Growing Lentinula edodes is quite simple and can be done at home or on a small scale. To do this, you need some basic materials such as hardwood logs (oak, beech, maple) or sawdust blocks, shiitake mycelium, which can be purchased in pellet form or impregnated sticks, and tools such as a drill, tape, a bucket of water, and gloves.

If you decide to grow on logs, select fresh wood that's 10-15 cm in diameter and recently felled.

Then drill holes about 2-3 cm deep into the logs every 10 cm. Next, inoculate the mycelium into the holes and cover them with wax to prevent contamination.

Once inoculated, place the logs in a dark, cool, and humid place, away from direct sunlight, and keep them hydrated during the incubation process.

The mushrooms will begin to grow in a few weeks to months, depending on the conditions, and you'll have fresh shiitake mushrooms in your kitchen whenever you need them.
